Abstract

This paper examines contemporary pragmatic approaches to the interpretation of directive speech acts in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. Directivity is analyzed in relation to illocutionary force, communicative context, social status, speech levels, and culture-specific norms. The comparative analysis demonstrates that the pragmatic acceptability of directives in Chinese is largely shaped by social harmony and mitigating devices; in Korean, by the honorific system and speech levels; and in Japanese, by keigo, contextual factors, and institutional norms of interaction.
