Abstract

Published data on germanium and rare earths in coal and its combustion  waste (fly ash, slag) were analysed to assess ash-slag waste as their technogenic source.  Germanium reaches 65–220 g/t in world coal ash (17.2 g/t on average in Uzbekistan)  and is recovered as a by-product by sorption leaching (up to 93 %); rare earths reach  404–447 g/t in fly ash, with light elements (Ce, La, Nd, Y) dominant. Ash-slag waste  is a promising source of both.
